Two semi-finals, four of the best teams in the world, and a betting board where the obvious picks are all short and the value is hiding in the detail. This is the column where I stop describing the games and start telling you exactly where I am putting my own money. I have gone through both ties, the outright market and the Golden Boot race, and pulled out the handful of bets I actually rate — with honest confidence ratings, not blanket optimism.

A quick word on discipline first, because semi-final week is where punters lose their heads. Four elite sides means tight prices and tight margins; there is no easy money here. The edge comes from backing the right angles, not the biggest names, and from staking sensibly. With that said, here are my picks.

A close-up of a betting slip and stadium lights evoking World Cup semi-final wagering

My rated value picks across both semi-finals — the draw in Dallas, both teams to score in Atlanta, and a value angle on the outright board.

Pick 1 — The Draw in France vs Spain (my strongest)

My single favourite bet of the round is the draw in Semi-final 1 at 3.10 (FanDuel via CBS, as of 13 July 7:49pm ET). This is the tournament’s best attack against its best defence — France with 16 goals and a perfect record, Spain having conceded a single goal all tournament — and it is being played almost certainly under a closed roof with no heat to force the tempo. Everything points to a tight, controlled, low-scoring chess match. Add that Spain have taken France to the wire in their last two semi-final meetings, and a level scoreline after 90 minutes looks genuinely underpriced at better than 3/1.

My confidence: 4 out of 5 stars.

Pick 2 — Both Teams to Score in England vs Argentina

Semi-final 2 is the tightest tie of the round, and the match-result prices reflect that — England 2.55–2.65, the draw 2.90–3.00, Argentina 3.00–3.05 (as of 12 July). When the books cannot separate two sides, I stop trying to pick a winner and look at how the game will be played instead. Both these attacks are potent: Argentina have scored three in every knockout game and lead the tournament on 17 goals, while England have Kane and Bellingham on six apiece. Both defences have shown cracks — England are missing suspended Quansah and injured Henderson, with Rice and James doubts, and Argentina let Switzerland score in the quarters. Both teams to score is where I want to be — the BTTS line moves book to book, so shop around for the best available price.

My confidence: 4 out of 5 stars.

Pick 3 — Spain on the Outright Board (the value play)

If you want a longer-priced angle, Spain to win the tournament at 4.20–4.33 is the best-value realistic threat to France on the whole board. They are the one side whose defence matches the favourite’s, they are unbeaten in 36, and the draw means they might have to beat France in the semi rather than the final — a shootout between two sides that do not concede is the great equaliser. I would not stake it heavily, but as a value alternative to France’s skinny 2.37, it is the smart-money position.

My confidence: 3 out of 5 stars.

Example: A $20 bet on Spain to win the World Cup at 4.20 returns $84 (a $64 profit) if they go all the way. The same $20 on France at 2.37 returns just $47.40 — so if you fancy an upset, the Spain ticket is where the value lives, backed by the tournament’s meanest defence.

Pick 4 — Golden Boot Value: Kane at a Big Price

Mbappé and Messi are locked on eight goals and dominate the Golden Boot market — Mbappé favourite around 1.71–2.10, Messi at 2.45. Both are short, and both could cancel each other out if France and Argentina meet in the final. The value angle for me is Harry Kane at 13.00. He sits two behind on six, but if England reach the final he gets two more games against tiring defences, and he has the pedigree to score in bunches. At 13/1 he is a genuine each-way-style flyer while the market fixates on the two leaders. It is a longshot — but that is exactly why the price is there.

My confidence: 2 out of 5 stars (a small-stakes flyer).

Pick 5 — The Semi-Finals Acca (for the accumulator fans)

For punters who like an acca, here is the one I would build for the week, keeping it to selections I actually rate rather than stacking favourites for the sake of it: the draw in France vs Spain (3.10) and both teams to score in England vs Argentina. Two correlated-in-spirit picks (tight defensive game, then an open shootout) that reflect how I genuinely expect the two semis to play out. Keep the stake modest; a two-leg acca is still two things that both have to land.

Strongest pick Draw in France vs Spain (3.10)
Best value Spain outright (4.20–4.33)
Longshot flyer Kane Golden Boot (13.00)
Acca SF1 draw + SF2 BTTS

A Word on Staking

None of these are locks, and I would not treat them as such. My strongest pick, the SF1 draw, is a 4-star play; the Spain outright and the Kane flyer are deliberately small stakes because they are longer-priced by design. Set a budget for semi-final week, split it so the flyers cost you little, and never chase a lost leg of the acca. The whole point of betting the value rather than the favourites is that it only works over time if you stay disciplined on the individual stakes.

My Verdict

The semi-finals reward the punter who reads the games rather than the names. My headline is the draw in Dallas at 3.10 — two elite defences under a closed roof, a recent history that says Spain do not fear France. My second is both teams to score in Atlanta, where two potent attacks meet two shaky defences in a coin-flip tie. For value on the outright, Spain at 4.20 is the play against a short France, and Kane at 13.00 is the fun longshot for the Golden Boot. Bet small on the flyers, sensible on the mains, and enjoy two cracking mornings of football.

What is your best bet for the World Cup semi-finals?
My strongest pick is the draw in France vs Spain at 3.10 — the tournament’s best attack against its best defence, likely under a closed roof, with Spain having taken France to the wire in their last two semi-final meetings.
What are the odds for the semi-finals?
France vs Spain: France 2.35 / Draw 3.10 / Spain 3.10 (as of 13 July). England vs Argentina: England 2.55–2.65 / Draw 2.90–3.00 / Argentina 3.00–3.05 (as of 12 July). Outright: France 2.37–2.50, Spain 4.20–4.33, England 4.10–4.40, Argentina 4.60–5.50.
Is there any value in the Golden Boot market?
Mbappé (1.71–2.10) and Messi (2.45) are both short on eight goals. The value flyer is Harry Kane at 13.00 — two behind on six, but with extra games and scoring pedigree if England reach the final.
Should I bet an accumulator on the semi-finals?
Only with a modest stake. My two-leg example — the SF1 draw plus both teams to score in SF2 — reflects how I expect the games to play out, but every leg still has to land, so keep it small.
